In Memoriam: Terry Gough

Dr. Terence E. Gough, 81, born in Portsmouth England died peacefully in his sleep at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Terry acquired his early training at the University of Leicester and then moved from England to join the University of Waterloo in Ontario. Here in Canada he became a well-established full professor with an international reputation in the fields of laser spectroscopy and photochemistry.  In 1989 Terry was recruited as Chair of the Department of Chemistry at UVic and led the Department for 10 years (1989-96).  Following that he served as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science during 1996-97. During his time in Victoria, Terry was the program leader of a national network of Centers of Excellence in Molecular and Interfacial Dynamics (CEMAID) which involved a group of about 50 researchers from around Canada. Terry retired from UVic in 2005. He will be remembered by his exceptional scientific contributions, strong leadership and his love for sailing. Terry’s wife Leslie passed away last April.  He is survived by his daughters Kirstie and Becky and his grandchildren.
