"The CUFA BC Distinguished Academics Awards are:

Academic of the Year Award

For a specific and recent outstanding contribution to the community beyond the academy through research or other scholarly activity by an individual or group at any stage of their career. A recent contribution would typically be within the past three years.

Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award

Named in memory of Dr. Paz Buttedahl – academic, community builder and faculty association leader – this award is for sustained outstanding contributions to the community beyond the academy through research or other scholarly activities by an individual or a group over the major portion of their career.

The Early in Career Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions made by scholars at relatively early stages in their careers. It is recognized that career patterns differ and so we encourage nominators to explain how this award is appropriate for their nominee. As a guide only, early in career is often defined as being "no more than five years from completion of a doctoral degree or equivalent" or "within three years of the initial appointment as an Assistant Professor." The adjudication committee will determine the appropriateness of nominations."

World Cultural Council Awards

"The World Cultural Council acknowledges individuals or institutions that have made outstanding achievements in science, education and the arts by granting the Albert Einstein World Award of Science, the José Vasconcelos World Award of Education and the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts to eminent figures whose work has had a significantly positive impact on the cultural legacy of mankind. These prizes are widely recognized in the scientific, educational and arts communities.

The Albert Einstein World Award of Science
was created as a means of recognition for scientists who have accomplished scientific and technological achievements which have brought progress to science and benefit to mankind. It is awarded annually.

The José Vasconcelos World Award of Education
has been established as an acknowledgement to those who have the all important labour of teaching the underlying basis of our present civilization. The prize is awarded every other year.

The Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts
may be conferred upon a renowned artist, sculptor, writer, poet, cinematographer, photographer, architect, musician or other performing artist, whose work constitutes a significant contribution to the artistic legacy of the world.

The José Vasconcelos and the Leonardo da Vinci awards are given in alternate years. The weight of these awards is bolstered by the fact that the jury is comprised of world-renowned personalities in their respective fields."

SSHRC Gold Medal for Achievement in Research

 "The SSHRC Gold Medal for Achievement in Research is the Council’s highest research honour. It is awarded to an individual whose leadership, dedication, and originality of thought have significantly advanced understanding in his or her field of research, enriched Canadian society, and contributed to the country's cultural and intellectual life.

The winner receives the Gold Medal and $100,000. The funds can only be used for research, training or other academic activities."

NSERC University–Industry Synergy Awards for Innovation

BC Innovation Council Awards

These "annual awards recognize exceptional achievements in, or potential for, commercialization of technology and honours outstanding technology innovators."

There are three awards:

BCIC Ripples of Hope Award in Biotechnology & Entrepreneurship  
The BCIC Ripples of Hope Award in Biotechnology & Entrepreneurship supports a graduate student, postdoctorate fellow or postgraduate collaborating on an entrepreneurship initiative in the biotechnology industry in BC.

Emerging Technology Award  
The Emerging Technology Award recognizes a new venture at the pre-investment stage that has developed an innovative technology in BC. The technology must demonstrate proof of concept and have strong potential for global commercialization.

Trudeau Fellowships

"Trudeau Fellowships are not granted for particular careers or specific activities, although these do factor into the evaluation of the candidates. Trudeau Fellows are chosen above all because they have proven that they can imagine and promote new solutions to major contemporary issues, relying on both the knowledge they have drawn from leading-edge research and the conscientious attention they pay to the needs of our society. Trudeau Fellows enjoy extensive freedom in their use of the funds they are given, and the Foundation does not require them to make a prior commitment to undertake any specific projects or programs of action. The only important criteria are the excellence of the candidate’s record and his or her moral and intellectual qualities. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank established The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award of 10,000,000 Swedish Kronor, approximately $1,473,000 CAD.
