GLBT resources

The University of Victoria is dedicated to promoting a safe, respectful and supportive learning and working environment for all members of the university community.

Resources at UVic

  • UVic Pride is a constituency group of the University of Victoria Students' Society that works to represent all people on campus who are queer, queer-positive, gender-variant and/or intersex. Their goal is to provide advocacy, education, information and referral services, as well as to organize political and social activities.
  • The Positive Space Network is a visible network of students, faculty, staff and alumni working to make the University of Victoria a safer and more inclusive space for people of all genders and sexualities.

Benefits for same sex partners

University of Victoria provides benefits to same sex partners. Benefits coverage is granted to legal spouses and to common-law partners, i.e. a person who has been publicly represented as your spouse for at least one year in the case of group benefits or two years for pension benefits.

In the community

Victoria has a thriving gay and lesbian community. The Victoria Pride Celebration, hosted by the Victoria Pride Society, takes place every summer (usually around the first week of July). Highlights of the celebration include the Pride Day Parade, which attracts some 35,000 people, the Big Gay Dog Walk, and the Pride Festival.

The South Island Pride Community Centre provides "support, health and social services, and public education for the well-being of people of all genders, gender identities, and sexualities, and their allies." There are also various other LGBT community resources in the Victoria area, including information on getting married in BC, resources for families and friends of lesbians and gays as well as many advocacy groups.

Whether you are planning a trip or looking for information on upcoming events, Tourism Victoria is also a great resource. There are several LGBT-friendly hotels approved by the Travel Alternatives Group (TAG). These accommodations have committed to non-discriminatory employment practices, supporting the gay and lesbian community and creating a gay-friendly experience for their guests.

  • Vancouver Island Pink Pages is a directory of local LGT-owned and friendly businesses
  • GayVictoria is a website offering live chat, an ad service and, in time, a number of other resources to the local GLBT community

Trans* resources

  • TransAction Victoria is a local collective, advocating for the rights of, and striving to create community with and for trans and gender-variant people in the Greater Victoria Area, Coast Salish Territories, through direct action, awareness raising activities and the ongoing project of creating safer spaces. Email for information on current activities.
  • Vic Genderqueers runs a mailing list where members can ask questions and post community announcements.
  • Transcend is a transgendered support and educational society
