NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) provides Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) to fund student researchers in the natural sciences and engineering fields. These awards are meant to support undergraduate students who seek the experience of research work and may go on to complete their graduate studies.

The value of a USRA is $6,000 for a full 16-week period. In addition to the $6,000 award from NSERC, the supervising faculty member will provide a top-up to ensure the student is paid no less than minimum wage during the 16-week period.

 

Student Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for USRA, a student must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of the deadline date for applications;
  • be registered, at the time of applying, in a bachelor's degree program at UVic;
  • have obtained, over the previous years of study, a cumulative average of at least 7 or higher on the UVic scale.

2024-2025 Competition

There are 2 awards available for the 2024-2025 academic year.

DMSC Application procedure

  1. Students who are interested in applying should contact a potential supervisor to discuss their project.
  2. Parts I and II of Form 202 in the NSERC Online Systemmust be completed by student and their confirmed supervisor.
  3. Completed Form 202 (both part I and II), a copy of an official transcript*, and a CV must be sent to dmsadmin@uvic.ca no later than February 26 at 11:59 pm.
  4. Successful applicants will be notified in March.

*If a student is using an unofficial transcript it must be signed by the Head of the Division of Medical Sciences.
