Financial support for graduate students

UVic offers graduate funding by means of scholarships, bursaries, grants and fellowships, as well as teaching and research assistantships. Contact the graduate advisor for your department or program to learn more visit the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Work study

Graduate students who meet financial need requirements are eligible to apply for work study positions funded by UVic’s Student Awards and Financial Aid department. The program provides on-campus part-time employment opportunities for students. Eligible students may work up to a maximum of 340 hours per year.

External funding

Students considering graduate studies at UVic should apply for external funding through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the primary funding body for humanities researchers.

Centre for Studies in Religion and Society

Each year, this research centre offers four graduate fellowships of $5,000 each plus office space to students working in the interdisciplinary study of religion in relation to any and all aspects of society and culture, both contemporary and historical.

Our faculty offers a number of awards to promote student research and travel in academic areas:

The Hugh Campbell and Marion Alice Small Graduate Teaching Fellowship in Scottish Studies

The Hugh Campbell and Marion Alice Small Graduate Teaching Fellowship in Scottish Studies scholarship provides an annual award of at least $10,000. Graduate students based in a Humanities department involved in any aspect of Scottish Studies at the PhD level are eligible to apply.

Sheila and John Hackett Research Travel Award

One graduate-student award is available for travel to the European Union for research purposes.

Margaret and Richard Beck Student Research Travel Award

One award of $6,000 is available for travel to Iceland for research or study on Icelandic language and literature.

Peter G. Liddell Humanities Computing Award

One or more awards of up to $1,000 for undergraduate students with minimum third-year standing or to graduate students who have completed a project in a course or thesis in the Humanities that makes a significant creative or innovative contribution to humanities computing.

Dean's Dissertation Year Scholarship in the Humanities

Up to three awards of up to $15,000 are available for doctoral students entering their final year of studies in the Faculty. Students entering their fifth year are particularly encouraged to apply.

Ukraine Emergency Doctoral Student Fellowship in the Humanities

The Ukraine Emergency Doctoral Student Fellowship in the Humanities provides an award of at least $40,000 to an academically outstanding PhD student who, at the time of application, is enrolled at any Ukrainian university in a doctoral program in the Humanities. The area of research must focus on any aspect of Ukrainian history, language, and/or culture, the Holodomor, Holocaust Studies, Genocide Studies, human rights, and/or social justice. Preference will be given to Ukrainian citizens.

Strategic Research Grants

The Strategic Research Grant program is intended to help offset the financial costs of conducting or producing research that is necessary for the completion of the applicant’s current graduate degree (MA, PhD). The maximum value is $500. Because the grant is to support research leading to the degree, it can be held only once during a degree program.
