Computers in the libraries

  • 160+ public computers are available through the Mearns Centre for Learning; 46 laptops are available for loan from Music & Media Services. All library workstations are governed by our Computer Use Policy.

I need help!

  • Get help with printing, scanning, formating, downloading and saving files at the Library Help Desk.

Helpful links:

  • Printing
    • How to print, PaperCut printing software, wireless printing from personal laptops.
  • Adaptive technology rooms
    • Information on equipment and software available for students with print-based and learning disabilities.
    • Priority for this equipment and software is given to those who require adaptive technologies. You may be asked to move to another workstation.

Tips for working on library computer workstations

  • Save your work regularly.
  • Log off when you are finished at a workstation.
  • Exit the application appropriately when finished.
  • The libraries are not responsible for lost work or misprints.

Saving and download documents

There are three options for saving documents in the Learning Commons:

1. UVic Individual temp directory ("I"drive) - **recommended option**

  • Select File > Save
  • In the Save As dialog box:
    • Enter a file name
    • Select the following location to save to: \\netdrive.uvic.ca\ (I:)
    • Create new folder here, naming it the same as your Netlink ID **
    • Open the folder you just created and save your document there.

Having your individual temp folder created on the I: drive will allow you to access it from elsewhere on campus, and from home, if you have installed the UVic VPN client.

** Be sure to read the "Read me first" information file in the \\netdrive.uvic.ca\ (I:). Any folders that are not named using the Netlink ID naming convention will be automatically renamed on a regular basis.

2. My Documents and/or Desktop

Documents may be saved to MyDocuments or to the Desktop, but please note: files saved to My Documents or to the Desktop will not be available from other campus computer labs or from home. Files you save to a Learning Commons computer will be available from any workstation within the Learning Commons when you log in with your Netlink ID.

We still recommend saving to an external storage device or to \\netdrive.uvic.ca\ (I:) before ending your session.

3. D: drive for CD, USB or flash drive

Select "D:" to save to the CD-RW drive, or select your external storage device. Remember to take your external drive (USB) or disk when you leave!

When downloading files or documents via the Internet, use the same instructions outlined above in order to keep a copy of whatever files you obtain.

Emailing documents and editing emailed documents

Use UVic Webmail or other web-based email applications (Hotmail, GMail etc) to email documents to yourself.

When opening a document from your web-based email application, save the document to the desktop before editing or printing your paper.
