Tiny Summit

Generously sponsored by Tiny, a Victoria-based venture investment company, the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business will be hosting a summit and competition for ventures between 6 months and 8 years post incorporation (as of June 30, 2024). The summit is for entrepreneurs looking to scale their business and reach their next revenue milestone. We invite all University of Victoria alumni whose start-ups meet these criteria to apply.

The Tiny Summit is an opportunity for a select group of entrepreneurial UVic alumni to:

  • compete for up to $24,000 in business funding prize money, with a first prize of $20,000
  • gather and discuss the challenges of scaling their businesses
  • connect with other entrepreneurs including the Tiny Fellows and last year’s scaling summit winners
  • get advice from the judges and other competitors

The venture team must include at least 1 alumni and/or a current or graduating student from the University of Victoria. The company’s incorporation must be between June 30th, 2016 and December 31st, 2023.

Successful applicants will have more than $30,000 in customer revenues and sufficient experience with their current business model to calculate the cost of customer acquisition and the lifetime value of a customer, with some confidence.

Lower revenues will be considered when there is significant intellectual property coupled with evidence of customer interest. That said, customer evidence must be strong (e.g. purchase orders).

Application process

We are now accepting submissions from UVic-founded ventures until Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at noon.

Please complete the application form and a 15-minute video using the Sequoia Pitch Deck Format. Finalists screened into the competition must be available for the in-person pitch and Q&A session on June 1st on-campus at UVic (note: remote/online competitors cannot be accommodated).

Summit & in-person presentation details

On competition day, you will provide a brief overview using the Sequoia Pitch Deck format plus Q&A, to a panel comprised of Tiny co-founder Andrew Wilkinson and business community members. In addition to the presentations, the summit will offer short-listed competitors high-impact networking, connections and advice. The panel of judges will announce the winner at the end of the day.

About the Tiny Summit Fund

Tiny co-founder Andrew Wilkinson started the Tiny Summit Fund to support Gustavson entrepreneurs in developing their businesses. This summit is a “follow-on” competition for ventures that are 6 months to 8 years old, and a second opportunity supported by Wilkinson, who also created the Tiny Start-Up Fund. The Tiny Start-Up Fund is given to Gustavson students or teams of students who win the annual Gustavson Business Start-Up Competition. Together, this “Tiny” community represents some of Gustavson’s top entrepreneurs.
