Using the UVic Libraries as Alumni

As UVic alumni, we encourage you to stay connected with our libraries and use their resources.

  • Use the library subject guides. These are maintained by librarians and provide timely information to fit your interests.
  • UVic Libraries has been successful in negotiating access to research databases wherever possible for Alumni. A list of databases for alumni is maintained here.
  • UVic Libraries offer alumni off-campus access to a number of databases. You must have an active Netlink ID to log in. Alumni who do not have a Netlink ID may apply for one online.
  • Most commercial publishers will provide access to select articles/titles via open access publishing, but it is not their full complement of titles.
  • UVic Libraries continues to negotiate better licensing terms and, through consortia, are developing new business models that will provide more equitable access beyond campus-affiliated members.
  • Unfortunately, most publishers do not include alumni in their licensing terms as an “authorized user” because their content is priced for educational use and not intended for commercial purposes. This restriction in licensing rights means not all digital products are available to alumni—and this limitation is common across Canadian educational institutions.
  • Alumni who have their own device (phone, tablet, laptop) can visit campus and access the online collection under the “walk-in” provisions of the Libraries’ licenses. Alumni simply need to connect to the public Wi-Fi on campus and navigate to Library resources.
