Research seminar

The Research Seminar is required of PhD students (with the exception of Astronomy students) whose catalog term is May 2018 or later.  Students must register in PHYS 662 beginning in the term after completing their Candidacy Exam, and continuing until the term in which they complete their Research Seminar.

Procedure

The student should contact the supervisor(s) to prepare for and schedule the seminar. The student should also contact the Graduate Program Assistant, at least two weeks prior to the seminar date, to arrange for a room booking and to provide their abstract to facilitate advertisement of the seminar.

The supervisor(s) decides if the student has successfully completed a presentation of the research that comprises the major portion of the student’s PhD thesis work.

The supervisor(s), will report the result of the examination to the Graduate Program Assistant.

After completion of the Research Seminar, the student no longer needs to register in PHYS 662.

Content

The Research Seminar is meant to demonstrate the student’s ability to present the research that comprises the major portion of the student’s PhD thesis work. The information being conveyed by the Research Seminar should be presented in a seminar format.

The length of the Research Seminar is usually 1 hour. The student should discuss the expected length and content with their supervisor.

Off-campus students

Off-campus students may be able to present their research seminars at an alternate venue. Please contact the Graduate Program Assistant for more information. A copy of the official seminar announcement will be required.
