Higgs boson

On July 4th 2012, both the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN announced the discovery of a new particle.  The event was chaired by CERN's Director General Dr. Rolf Heuer, who holds a Honorary Doctorate from UVic.  Measurements so far reveal that it is a boson and that it is compatible with the predicted Standard Model Higgs particle.  This discovery is compared in importance to the experimental discovery of antimatter 80 years ago.  The ATLAS UVic Group, a founding member of the ATLAS Collaboration, has made key contributions to this success and contributes to the analysis of the collected data.
