Stellar engulfment

PhD student Jean-Claude Passy of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the University of Victoria in British Columbia and his colleagues are conducting research on how planets can survive engulfement by giant stars.  Their work was recently featured on SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN's Blog.
