Fall 2024

The Math & Stats Assistance Centre tutors will available for free drop-in face-to-face tutoring in ELL 165 and LIBR 129 starting on Monday, Sept 9th extending through the exam period. Details are below.

Self-paced review materials, including end-of term review materials for certain courses, are available on the Math & Stats Assistance Centre Brightspace site.

Collaborative study space

The Betty & Gilbert Kennedy Math & Stats Assistance Centre is located in ELL 165. The room will be usually open for collaborative study from 9:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday. 

Tutors on duty

September 9th - December 4th, 2024

The Math & Stats Assistance Centre tutors will be available for drop-in tutoring starting in the second week of the term (Monday, September 9th, 2023). Although you can ask about any 1st- or 2nd-year math course at any time, we have a schedule by course so you know when at least one tutor is very comfortable supporting your class.  

Our tutors available for in-person tutoring at the following times (also available in .pdf format).

  • Mondays & Thursdays:
    • 11:30am-1:30pm in ELL 165
    • 2:30 - 6:30pm in Library 129
  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays:
    • 9:30am - 1:30pm in ELL 165
    • 2:30-6:30pm PT: Library 129
  • Sundays:
    • 12:30-6:30pm PT: Library 129

The Math & Stats Assistance Centre will be closed on Monday, September 30th (Truth and Reconciliation Day), Sunday, Oct 13th and Monday, Oct 14th (Thanksgiving), Sunday, Nov 10th through Wednesday, Nov 13th (Reading Break), and 11:30am-12:30pm Dec 4th (National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women).

If you are unable to come to campus and would like to meet with a tutor through Zoom during our open hours, please contact Josh, MSAC program coordinator, msacpc@uvic.ca. You can expect a reply within 4 hours during working hours (9:30am - 4:30pm Mondays to Thursdays or 12:30-6:30pm Sundays) or on the following working day.

Exam Period

We will have a special exam period schedule, which will be posted in November.

Workshops

The Math & Stats Assistance Centre will be offering 3 workshops this term. All will involve a brief discusssion of the scholarly work on the topic, practical tips you can implement in your studying this term, and group activities to put advice into action right away. 

If you cannot attend because of the scheduling please express interest to msacpc@uvic.ca in planning a session at another time. 

Review your last course

Are you taking a 100- or 200-level MATH or STAT course this Fall? Do you want to brush up on your last math course first? The Math & Stats Assistance Centre has a suite of self-paced review materials to support you! To access these materials, please join our Brightspace site.

Closed: MondayMay 20th (Victoria Day), Monday, July 1st and Tuesday, July 2nd (Canada Day and Reading Break), and Monday, August 5th (BC Day). 

Exam period schedule

We adjusted our schedule during the exam period from August 6th - 16th to better meet the needs of students. Tutors will be available in ELL 165 at the following days and times during the exam period (August 6th - 15th):

  • Tuesday, Aug 6th, 3:30-5:30pm
  • Wedesday, Aug 7th, 3:30-5:30pm *Extra day compared to summer term*
  • Thursday, Aug 8th, 3:30-5:30pm
  • Friday, Aug 9th, 11am-1pm  *Different time compared to summer term*
  • Monday, Aug 12th, 12:30-2:30pm
  • Tuesday, Aug 13th, 3:30-5:30pm
  • Wednesday, Aug 14th, 9-11am *Extra day compared to summer term*
  • Thursday, Aug 15th, 3:30-5:30pm

The assistance centre will be closed on Friday, Aug 16th. The assistance centre will open for the fall term on Monday, Sept 9th.

Self-paced review

The Math & Stats Assistance Centre has prepared some self-paced review modules for students who are preparing for certain first-year courses this term. To access these materials, please enrol yourself in the Math & Stats Assistance Centre Brightspace.

 

 

Collaborative study space

The Betty & Gilbert Kennedy Math & Stats Assistance Centre is located in ELL 165. You are welcome to connect with other students from your class in our main space, or study quietly in ELL 165a or ELL 165b. You can work on any of our whiteboards or chalkboard, including trying out our whiteboard tables! The room will usually be open for collaborative study from 9:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

We will have tutors available for in-person tutoring at the following times:

  • Mondays - Fridays, 9:30am-1:30pm PT: ELL 165
  • Mondays - Fridays, 2:30-6:30pm PT: Library 129
  • Sundays, 1:30-5:30pm PT: Library 129

We will be closed 2:30-6:30pm on Friday, February 16th and all day February 18th - 24th for reading break. We will also be closed Friday March 29th - Monday April 1st for the holiday weekend.

Each workshop will cover different topics, so you are welcome to attend any one without committing to the others. If you are not available at the scheduled time, please email msacpc@uvic.ca in case there is interest in scheduling additional sessions.

Physical locations

Betty & Gilbert Kennedy Math & Stats Assistance Centre in ELL 165 is our primary location.

The Learning Commons (McPherson Library) is our second location. Find us in Room 129, on the main floor of the McPherson Library, for in-person tutoring from 11:30am-1:30pm Mondays and Fridays, and 3:30pm - 5:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, during the symmer term.
