Julia Baum co-authors report on science funding in Canada

Analysis on the state of fundamental research funding — co-led by Julia Baum from the Department of Biology — was recently released.

The report found that 40% of Canadian scientists changed the direction of their research program in the past 10 years — usually away from basic science. The story was picked up by the Toronto Star, Ottawa CitizenNature, and Science and mentioned in the National Observer

The Ottawa Citizen's science reporter says "they say most labs are thinking less like Einstein, and more like someone designing the next iPhone or heart drug." His story, in the front section of today's paper, indicates the Liberal government so far has been a "'huge'" help, but "a decade of tight federal funding has driven many to study short-term topics of applied research instead."
