Local government

The Greater Victoria area consists of 13 municipalities, each with its own mayor and council.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) is the regional government and main service provider for these 13 municipalities plus the three electoral areas of Juan de Fuca, Salt Spring Island, and Southern Gulf Islands.

Some municipalities handle their own utilities such as water, sewage, or solid waste management (including recycling). The larger municipalities such as Victoria have their own police and fire departments, while others are served by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and volunteer firefighters.

The UVic campus spans the border between the municipalities of Oak Bay and Saanich.
