Assistant Teaching Professor

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Learning and Teaching Centre at the University of Victoria invite applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position to commence on July 1, 2014. 

This position represents a rare opportunity for a dynamic and innovative mathematician or statistician with a genuine passion for teaching to lead a university-wide initiative in developing best practices for mathematics education at the post-secondary level. The successful candidate will find a supportive and intellectually challenging academic environment in which to create cutting-edge, nationally recognized curriculum and delivery modes that promote student achievement and success in mathematical sciences courses.

This is a regular faculty position which carries a two-course annual teaching load.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline and a demonstrated commitment to student success in undergraduate mathematics and statistics curriculum. Applicants must have an outstanding record of achievement in teaching mathematics and/or statistics. It is expected that the applicant will provide documented evidence of engagement on pedagogical issues within the mathematical sciences, including collaboration with faculty and/or graduate student peers on the development and implementation of best practices in teaching or other evidence of teaching mentorship. A teaching record that demonstrates a wide range of first- and second-year Mathematics and Statistics courses taught and/or a demonstrated record of improving recruitment and retention in mathematics courses will be an asset.  

Duties will include: taking a lead role in development and implementation of a university-wide vision for innovative mathematical sciences curriculum with a focus on high levels of student achievement and student success; serving as the Director of the Mathematics and Statistics Assistance Centres and thereby being responsible for evaluation of the performance of the Centres, for the scheduling and training of staff tutors and for consultation with user departments and Learning Commons staff on the needs of students visiting the Centres; the scheduling, evaluation and mentorship of student teaching assistants for tutorials, laboratories, grading and other forms of classroom assistance in support of courses offered by the department; as the Mathematics and Statistics Specialist Consultant at the university's Learning and Teaching Centre, to give support to colleagues throughout the campus in development of math pedagogy skills and knowledge; consultation across the university regarding issues of numerical literacy and; consultation on and evaluation of specific pedgagogical issues in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The successful applicant will be expected to: engage in teaching and learning scholarship in the area of math pedgagogy; lead workshops in releavant areas through the Learning and Teaching Centre; have an understanding of academic cross-cultural issues as they pertain to math pedagogy; promote engagement in large classes through innovative teaching with technology; be enthusiastic about, and enjoy teaching to non-specialists and; to provide related service to the University.

The initial appointment shall be for a term of three years with a normal expectation of subsequent re-appointment for a second 4 year term. Assistant Teaching Professors (ATP) are eligible for continuing appointment status after 7 years of service and may apply for the rank of Teaching Professor after 11 years of service.
