Assistant Professor (Limited-Term) in Indigenous Communities Counselling Program

The Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies (EPLS), University of Victoria invites applications for a one (two) year Limited Term position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Indigenous Communities Counselling to begin January 1, 2014.  The position is for an individual with background and specialization in Indigenous counselling and healing as well as in western theory and approaches to counselling. The successful candidate will be coordinating and teaching in the new community-based Indigenous Communities Counselling program (formerly the Aboriginal Communities Counselling Program - ACCP). A cohort of 16 to 18 students is expected to begin in January 2014, subject to sufficient enrollment.

The ICCP is a new graduate degree program designed together with Indigenous community helpers and educators to offer graduate level professional Counselling education and training that is relevant to, and consistent with, the values and traditions of Indigenous communities.  These values and traditions are integrated into every course in the program. Indigenous community needs and partnerships are a central focus – community voices have guided the ACCP pilot delivery and will continue to guide this new program. It is a part-time program specifically designed for adult learners who are working in mental health and helping contexts within Indigenous communities. Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in counselling psychology or related degree in counselling
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in Indigenous counselling or helping contexts

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in community-based teaching and/or counselling environments
  • Certification or eligible for certification with the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA)
  • Successful record of teaching at the undergraduate level (graduate level teaching an asset)
  • Post-secondary program coordination and development experience
  • Teaching and experiential background in two or more of the following areas:
    • Indigenous counselling and healing
    • Counselling skill training
    • Counselling theories
    • Trauma counselling

Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of a community-based ICCP cohort that commences January 1, 2014
  • Contribute to ongoing development of the ICCP
  • Teaching of graduate courses in the ICCP program
  • Supervision of ICCP graduate students’ practica
  • Supervision of graduate students’ projects and research
