The Honourable Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree ('83)

The Honourable Chief Judge Thomas (Tom) Crabtree ('83) will be recognized tonight for his professional achievements and leadership at UVic's Distinguished Alumni Awards. Tom is one of 12 leading members of UVic's alumni community to receive this honour. Faculty of Social Sciences recipient and UVic Law alumni, The Honourable Marion Ruth Buller Bennett ('87), is also being honoured tonight.

The awards are part UVic's annual Alumni Week celebrations and will be presented at the University Club by UVic Chancellor Murray Farmer and UVic Alumni Association President Peter Tanner.

Tom attended UVic's School of Public Administration from 1978 to 1980 and received his LLB from UVic in 1983. He was called to the BC Bar in 1984 and first appointed to the Provincial Court in February 1999. Tom was appointed Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of British Columbia on April 8, 2010 for a term of 5 years.

Tom is active in judicial education having served on the Court's Education Committee for a number of years and chaired the Committee from 2004 to 2008. In 2007, he participated in a delegation of judges who met with Chinese judges in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Tom remains active in the development and planning of judicial programs and seminars and he chaired the Court's Education Review Committee which involved the organization and delivery of judicial education in the Provincial Court.

Tom is married to his wife Brenda and they have two adult children. Their son Andrew is a 2008 graduate of UVic Law and their daughter Katelyn is a current UVic Law student.
