Awards, scholarships, bursaries and prizes

Department of Pacific and Asian Studies students, who are taking courses from the department, are eligible for a number of awards. To check the scholarship and awards open for general UVic students, please go to the UVic Student Awards and Financial Aid website.

Pacific and Asian Studies Student Research and Exchange Fund Annual Award

This award is intended to support advanced language and cultural study or thesis research in the Asia-Pacific region.

Criteria for Eligibility: Student majoring in Pacific and Asian Studies or enrolled in the M.A. program in Pacific and Asian Studies for an advanced language exchange program or research for an honours thesis or M.A. thesis.

Applications should include a brief essay describing the proposed program of study or research, the financial requirements of the proposed program, other sources of funding secured or to which the applicant has already applied, and how the proposed program fits into the applicant’s overall academic goals. The total submission should be no more than 2 pages in length.

The following scholarships and awards are recommended by the department. Students are not required to fill in an application.

Ho Ka Ki and Ho Chan Shun Graduate Award

One or more scholarships are awarded to graduate students in the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies who are studying any of the regions or disciplines taught in the Department.

May Yuen Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to a graduate student who is in a Master's or PhD program and whose research is related to China or Overseas Chinese.

Michiko Warkentyne Scholarship in Japanese Studies

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students who are taking courses on Japan in the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies.

Philip K. H. Wong Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to a graduate student who is in a Master's or PhD program and whose research is related to China or Overseas Chinese. If no graduate student is eligible for the scholarship, an award may be given to an undergraduate student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese.

Po Ting Ip and Wai Tsuen Lee Ip Scholarship in Pacific and Asian Studies

One or more scholarships are awarded to students continuing in an undergraduate or graduate program in the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies, who have taken a course on classical Chinese tradition.
