Title: Teaching Digital Humanities across Europe: Efforts at harmonization of DH content and attribution by European research Infrastructures and National DH organisations

Abstract: For the last decade, European Research Infrastructures like DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) and CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Infrastructures), as well as national and regional DH umbrella organizations like DHd (Digital Humanities in German-speaking countries) have allocated considerable effort to promoting Digital Humanities education and degrees across Europe, developed tools, syllabi and whole curricula, and addressed issues of attribution and canonical content across national borders.  The online learning platform #DARIAHteach (http://dariah.eu/teach/) is developing and providing open source, community-driven, high quality, multilingual teaching materials for the digital arts and humanities and exemplifies ongoing efforts at harmonization of DH content, but also encourages cultural and linguistic diversity. While the platform presents one prominent approach at creating a sample European reference curriculum for Digital Humanities, similar considerations among special interest groups from national DH organizations have fueled an ongoing discussion on the very nature and requirements of teaching Digital Humanities, revealing methodological and administrative challenges alike.

Bio: Walter Scholger studied History and Applied Cultural Sciences in Graz and Maynooth. He has been the Assistant Director of the Center for Information Modeling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Graz (Austria) since 2008, where he is primarily dealing with administrative issues, project management and the coordination of the Centre’s teaching activities. He is involved in several international projects (like “CO:OP: community as opportunity – the creative users' and archives' network“, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union) focusing on legal aspects of academia and digitization, and a member of working groups of DH umbrella organizations (like DHd) dedicated to DH curricula development and issues of digital publication. A veteran contributor to DARIAH-EU, he has been active in several Working Groups, served as Co-Head of the “Training and Education” Working Group from 2013 to 2017 and has just started co-chairing a new Working Group on “Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities” with Koraljka Kuzman Šlogar.
