Stocktober 2024: A Community Effort to Support the UVSS Food Bank
Stocktober is an annual fundraising drive for the UVSS Food Bank in the month of October, collecting funds and essential items to support students facing food insecurity. In 2024, the ATWP community came together in collaborative effort to help alleviate food insecurity in the campus community. ATWP instructor Dr. Kate Skipsey played a crucial role in organizing and widening Stocktober's outreach to the sessional instructor community. Dr. Skipsey explained, “One of the many benefits of our smaller class sizes is that students feel more inclined to approach instructors for help beyond the classroom environment. We know we have students who rely on the Food Bank, and if we can help some of their daily stress, then we’ve done something good.”
The 2024 campaign saw a significant increase from previous efforts, raising $250 and collecting 14 items. This growth not only reflects the rising support for the cause but also highlights the increasing awareness of the financial pressures students face. According to Dr. Skipsey, “The pressure on food banks is mounting every day. Some students are even living out of their cars, and food banks are at risk of shutting down without more support. This is a resource we need to invest in to support our students.” Stocktober also provides an opportunity to foster a sense of community, strengthen relationships, and raise awareness about the essential role of the food bank on campus. Stocktober 2024 welcomed generous contributions and a matching donation from Island Savings.
