Two-Spirit Dry Lab's Harlan Pruden featured at HSD Research Day
Harlan Pruden, a nēhiyo/First Nations Cree scholar known for his work with and for the Two-Spirit community, will open HSD Research Day on April 25.
Pruden’s plenary presentation, entitled Reconcili(a)ction in Research: Working to Be in Better Relations by Culturally Accounting for & Affirming Two-Spirit People & Communities, will explore the purpose, work, and impact of the Two-Spirit Dry Lab—Turtle Island’s first research group dedicated exclusively to Two-Spirit people, communities and experiences. The lab is based at the BC Centre for Disease Control, Simon Fraser University, and the Community-Based Research Centre.
HSD Research Day is a one-day research symposium at UVic that celebrates research and researchers in the Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD). This year, it welcomes researchers based at schools and programs that will become part of the Faculty of Health on May 1.
More than 30 scholars and students will present at Sngequ House on research relating to the theme Partnering for a Shared Future, one of the University of Victoria’s strategic priorities, and a theme that unites research conducted across HSD.
Acting Associate Dean Research Karen Urbanoski says this year’s symposium is an opportunity to gather to share and celebrate the research we have collectively co-created with diverse partners.
“This year’s event will celebrate our many research collaborations – a fitting theme for the last HSD Research Day, as we look forward to future partnerships and opportunities”
Presenters include scholars and students from across HSD, the Division of Medical Sciences, Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education, the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research and Psychology. Sessions will address:
- Relationality and co-creation in research
- Evidence synthesis and knowledge translation for community health
- From bench to community: health research at UVic
- Perspectives on policy and practice
Presentations will be followed by a poster fair in the Michel Pujol Room in the Student Union Building and the presentation of the 2025 HSD Research Excellence Awards.
This event is free to attend, and includes breakfast, lunch and afternoon refreshments.
