Ted and Jane Wooley Scholarship
Wesley T. (Ted) Wooley (1942-2007, Ph.D. University of Chicago,) was an early member of the UVic History department. First appointed in 1968, he taught hundreds of students who took his courses on United States history. Ted published articles, gave public lectures, courses and conference papers on topics such as American foreign policy, diplomatic history, the American peace movement, the Cold War, and the Vietnam war. His book, Alternatives to Anarchy: American Supranationalism since World War II, was published by Indiana University Press in 1988.
Ted served three terms as department chair (1979-82 and 1995-2000), leading the department through critical years of renewal and growth. Beyond the History department, Ted served the university in many capacities. He was Assistant to the Vice-President, Academic (1983-86 and 1988-89); a member of University Senate in the 1980s and 1990s; a president of the Faculty Club; and an active supporter of the Faculty Association.
Jane Wooley (BA, English, Northwestern University) moved to Victoria in 1968. After working part-time at the University of Victoria during her child-rearing years, she took a full-time position in Continuing Studies in Education where she soon became the assistant to the director. After 20 enjoyable years, she retired, with Ted, in 2004.
