Jamie Chien-Ming Wu Award for Achievement in Biomedical Engineering
Madeleine Jiang is establishing this award in loving memory of Jamie Chien-Ming Wu. Both Jamie and Madeleine began their studies at UVic, with Jamie starting in 2002 and Madeleine in 2003. Madeleine was pursuing science courses and would later transfer to UBC to pursue a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Jamie continued his studies at UVic, graduating proudly with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 2008. Their life successes were rooted in their commitment to lifelong education; knowledge provided them with the confidence to succeed in all their professional and personal endeavors.
After graduation, Jamie accepted a full-time position with Schneider Electric in Victoria, a company he greatly admired. During his time there, Jamie quickly found his place within the technical support team and was popular amongst his colleagues. In his first year at Schneider Electric, Jamie was recognized with the Outstanding Performer award, and was also voted Team-Mate of the Quarter by his fellow colleagues.
Jamie passed away in February of 2011 from the result of a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Although his life was short, Jamie had a happy, fulfilling life complete with love, joy and laughter. Jamie was an incredible friend who touched the lives of many. He was thoughtful, caring and always willing to lend a hand. He will be missed by all for his smile, his laugh, and his incredibly loud ways. It’s not everyday that people are fortunate enough to have their lives touched by someone so positive, generous, and genuine. Jamie left a lasting impression and great memories in the minds of those who knew him.
Graduating in 2009, Madeleine has been working as a clinical pharmacist specializing in long term care. With Madeleine’s background in pharmacy and Jamie’s education in engineering, she has chosen to establish this award in biomedical engineering. This field seeks to close the gaps between engineering and medicine and advance healthcare to the next level.
The vision of this fund is to award a student annually who displays Jamie's lifelong values of commitment to education, effort, and perseverance. It is with sincere hope that this award will allow a deserving student the opportunity to share the joys and struggles that are inherent in biomedical engineering. This endowment award is a testament to who Jamie was and will continue to be for future students.
