Francis Woods Memorial Scholarship
After a 30 year career in the RCMP, Dennis Flewelling, at age 49, began coursework at UVic in 1996 and completed his Master’s Degree in 2003. Following this, Dennis was Regional Manager for Aboriginal Policing Directorate for British Columbia and Yukon, Government of Canada and later a consultant on police and justice issues for the Kitasoo Xaixais First Nation on BC’s west coast.
Janice Flewelling (nee Woods) had a 45-year career in the medical imaging field beginning as a radiographer and later as a sonographer. She worked in hospitals and clinics in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon.
Francis Woods, a London businessman, was Janice’s great uncle. Early in the 20th century he contemplated coming out to Canada and joining his brother near the farming community of Moosomin, Saskatchewan. However, at the outbreak of World War One, Francis joined the British Army and was subsequently killed at the Battle of the Somme on July 3rd 1916. His remains were never recovered.
