John Patrick McManaman CPA Memorial Award

John McManaman

John Patrick McManaman was known as a quiet, somewhat reserved, gentle, and kind person with an amazing sense of humour and a very sharp intellect.  He was a gifted athlete and unselfish teammate, excelling in basketball, baseball, golf and track.

John was born in 1957 in Penticton, BC, with the family moving to Victoria in 1966.  In 1980, he graduated from UVic with a bachelor’s degree in economics, while playing Junior Varsity basketball for the Vikes.  He completed his Chartered Accountant designation with the accounting firm Ernst & Whinney, now known as KPMG and continued to work for the firm for several years. John was very dedicated to his profession – putting in long days to ensure projects were completed.  He believed “math is the basic foundation of all things in life.”  At the time of his sudden passing in 2017, John was the Chief Financial Officer for Farmer Group of Companies.

A true family man, John was married to his wife Doreen for 31 years. He was a very active, devoted, and inspirational role model to his two sons, Connor and Liam, also outstanding athletes who graduated from UVic in 2017 and 2021 respectively.  In his spare time, John enjoyed reading books, newspapers and listening to all types of music.  He coached basketball, soccer, and fastball in the Saanich community.  John was also a long-time committee member of the Golf for Kids organization, helping to get it started in 1997.

Our family is very grateful to our friends at Golf for Kids for generously funding this award so that we may continue to celebrate and honour John’s legacy and his true passion for helping others. John is truly “the gift that keeps on giving.”
