Alexander and Glenda Kirk Award

Professor Sandy Kirk earned his PhD in physical chemistry from Edinburgh University and emigrated to UBC as a postdoctoral fellow in 1959. In 1961 he joined then Victoria College's chemistly department where he taught, served as department chair for six years and did research in inorganic photochemistry and spectroscopy for almost forty years. Glenda Kirk (néeHawes) graduated from Oak Bay High School and attended UVic obtaining her BA with majors in English, Spanish, anthropology and sociology. After a period in Chile with CUSO she taught business education in several Victoria schools but in particular Esquimalt Secondary. Both Kirks were grateful for the scholarships they received during their undergraduate years, enabling them to complete their university education. Their wish is to provide similar suppor to students with promise.
