Dianne Draper Environmental Sustainability and Stewardship Scholarship
Dianne received her BSc (Hons) and MA degrees in Geography from the University of Victoria. Following her PhD degree from the University of Waterloo she joined the Geography department at Memorial University of Newfoundland (1977-1988). In 1988 she joined the University of Calgary’s Geography department, retiring in 2021 as Professor Emerita of Geography.
At the University of Calgary she designed and taught dozens of graduate and undergraduate courses in human and physical geography, in resource use and management, and in recreation, amenity and tourism. She also offered off-campus field courses focused on tourism, parks and recreation, based in the mountain national parks and provincial parks. Dianne’s research and scholarship focuses on Canadian resources and environmental management, including sustainability, stewardship, policy and planning dimensions related to tourism, parks and protected areas, wildlife, and fresh water. Her peer-reviewed articles appear in a range of high quality Canadian and international journals. She is the founding author of Our Environment; A Canadian Perspective. Dianne also served as: Head of the Geography Department (1998-2007); Chair of the Calgary River Valleys Committee (2001-2005); Chair/Vice-Chair/Past Chair of the City of Calgary’s Environmental Advisory Committee (2002 to 2007); a member of the Board of Directors of the Parks Foundation Calgary (2001-2011).
