Gender Equity Project update/Who to call?/Bargaining starts

June 20, 2014

Joint Committee on Gender Pay Equity report

The Joint Committee on Gender Pay Equity (established in the last round of bargaining) is working hard to wrap up phase two of the project. We remain committed to implementing gender pay equity for our faculty and librarians as soon as reasonably possible.

Who to call?

While the two bargaining teams work through the negotiation process, we’d also like to let you know who you can call if you have questions or need help in working with the current Framework Agreement, which continues to apply while bargaining continues. We hope the following will be helpful:

  • Terms and conditions of employment during bargaining are practically unchanged. Therefore, it remains “business as usual” for arrangements that are made under the Framework Agreement. For arrangements such as these please work with your Chair/Director, Dean, Faculty Association or the Director, Faculty Relations in VPAC, just as you normally would.
  • If you need to negotiate arrangements that are outside the Framework Agreement, the Faculty Association has the sole right to represent its members. However, during the interim period, the administration and the Association have agreed that these arrangements must be considered by the joint transition team (composed of Richard Pickard, Chief Negotiator for the Faculty Association; Douglas Baer, Past-President of the Faculty Association; Mary Anne Waldron, AVP Faculty Relations; and Pamela Nielsen, Director of Faculty Relations). Arrangements can be brought to the joint team for consideration at any point in the process by contacting any of its members; this can be done by either the Association member or the administrator engaged in the negotiations.

Bargaining starts

The administration and Faculty Association bargaining teams began formal bargaining on June 17, with the presentation of opening statements. The administrations' opening statement can be found here (PDF). During the last several weeks, the teams have been meeting to finalize bargaining protocols, discuss the organization of the agreement and consider how to approach such a large task.  We are looking forward to working to successfully create our first collective agreement.
