Process and protocols discussed and new website launched

First process and protocol meeting held

The Faculty Association and administration bargaining teams held their first process and protocol meeting May 6 to discuss their 2014 collective bargaining protocols. Once established, these protocols will act as the ground rules for the negotiations, including details around how proposals are to be brought forward and the bargaining structured.

The parties have agreed to meet again on May 13 to continue the discussions. We are not yet at the stage of tabling proposals, but these meetings are key to bargaining preparation and will assist both parties with the negotiation of our first collective agreement. That agreement will replace the current Framework Agreement and provide the structure for our new employment relationship.

New bargaining website launched

We have now finalized a new university bargaining website: www.uvic.ca/bargaining. Please check this site for future updates on bargaining with all UVic employee groups, including the Faculty Association. You will also find general information on a number of areas including:

  • The university's negotiations with its various faculty and staff groups.
  • The economic and financial context for these negotiations.
  • Progress on negotiations in other publicly-funded sectors.
  • The principles which underlie the university's approach to bargaining.
  • The provincial rules under which university negotiations must operate.
  • Background information on each of the six bargaining groups.

Over the course of 2014, the university will be bargaining with five other employee groups as well:

  • CUPE 951: Representing office employees, library assistants, technicians, nurses and child care workers.
  • CUPE 917: Representing trades, grounds workers, security officers, facility attendants and janitorial, maintenance and food service workers among others.
  • CUPE 4163 (components 1 & 2): Component 1 represents teaching assistants, lab instructors, computer lab assistants, and academic assistants. Component 2 represents second language instructors in the English Language Center and French Language Programme, and cultural assistants.
  • CUPE 4163 (component 3): Component 3 represents continuing instructors, sessional instructors (a.k.a. "sessional lecturers") and music performance instructors.
  • Professional Employees Association: Representing administrative and academic professionals.
