ProteusDS Workshop

On May 2nd and 3rd 2013, UVic WCWI members joined forced with representatives from Resolute Marine Energy, Seawood Designs and Ocean Energy Limited to become proficient with our WEC simulation software, ProteusDS. ProteusDS is a dynamic numerical modeling tool made available to WCWI members by Dynamic Systems Analysis (DSA) in order facilitate the numerical modeling of WEC performance in the sea states measured off the west coast of Canada. As partners in WCWI, all collaborating WEC developers are be able to continually work with DSA to create the most realistic and robust models of their devices – thereby hopefully eliminate as many physical design iterations as possible.

After just a few hours of working with ProteusDS, all attendees were thoroughly immersed in the software and amazed by the versatility and ease of use. By the end of the first day, all attendees had already created a basic representation of a point absorber WEC and were ready to explore beautiful Victoria waterfront. Thanks to DSA for an incredible dinner overlooking the harbor at the Canoe Club !

During the second day of the workshop, attendees focused on creating simplistic representations of their devices with the help of DSA employees. Given the short two day workshop and the number of different devices to be modeled, it was incredible to watch all attendees “find their feet” within Proteus and begin to build more and more complex devices and mooring.
