Digitization Centre

About Us

The Digitization Centre at the University of Victoria Libraries supports the production and delivery of a large array of online digital collections. Our staff have expertise in digitizing a variety of media including books, manuscripts, photographs, artwork, microforms, maps, and posters. We work with the library’s cataloguing unit to apply standardized metadata that ensures high visibility in search engines and scholarly indexes.

UVic Libraries have a strong commitment to public access. The vast majority of our digitized collections are freely and openly available for research, teaching exploration, use, and study. Our material can also be found in the Flickr Commons and the Internet Archive.

The Digitization Centre houses a variety of specialized equipment including:

-          TTI Repro-graphic 4060 large format, high resolution scanner

-          Internet Archive Table Top Scribe

-          ScanPro 1000 Microfilm Scanner

-          Creaform Go!Scan 20 portable 3D scanner

-          Golden Thread image quality assurance software

Partnerships

The Libraries’ Digitization Centre has partnered on a number of successful grant applications. We welcome collaborations with faculty, students, and community partners. If you would like to suggest a project, please consult our Digitization Project Request Form (request form). We are especially interested in creating collections that meet the following criteria:

  • Materials have historical, scholarly, or cultural significance
  • Materials are unique or rare, and are not yet available online
  • Materials are held in UVic Libraries’ collections
  • Materials are not under copyright restrictions (copyright guide)
  • Materials do not have privacy concerns (privacy guide)
  • Materials are at-risk, or content is in need of preservation
  • Special consideration will be given to materials of Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and Canadian origin, in that order.
