Technology Solutions Centre: Computers

The purpose of the Technology Solutions Centre (TSC) is to provide assistance to faculty and staff with institutional technology acquisitions. Faculty and staff interested in acquiring computers are encouraged to contact the Technology Solutions Centre, where trained staff can assess requirements, recommend solutions, assist with acquiring computer equipment, provide demonstrations, and answer questions regarding desktop and laptop computer configurations.

If you have been directed to the Technology Solutions Centre to submit a form requesting approval for deviation from personal computer standards (University Policy AD2515), please fill out and return the Standards Review Document.

Update to Institutional Apple Purchase: Apple has changed the process for ordering Apple computers and equipment. All purchases must be made through a UVic-specific online store. In response to this new requirement, University Systems and Purchasing Services have developed a new process to facilitate purchases of Apple computers and equipment at educational pricing.

Update to Pro-D/CAF Technical Approval: If you have been directed to the Technology Solutions Centre to receive technical approval for a Professional Development (Pro D) or Computer Acquisition Fund (CAF) reimbursement, please read the Technical Approval Requirements for Computer Equipment Reimbursements document. We strongly recommend requesting technical approval prior to purchasing equipment as computer hardware not approved by the TSC will not be reimbursed by Accounting.

Why should I buy a TSC standard PC?

  1. You will get a modern, reliable computer that will meet your computing needs at 20-40% less than the retail price
  2. Your computer will be delivered to your office within 24 hours of your order
  3. You do not need to worry about Office or anti-virus software; it's included!
  4. You receive 3-years of next-business-day on-site warranty repair service
  5. You will be fully licensed to run all software included with your computer

How do I order these workstations?

If your department has desktop support, please contact this individual to obtain these workstations. If you have access to WebReq and would like to make these purchases yourself, please click the "Buy now" button beneath the workstation that you are interested in, attach your order form to a WebReq, and submit the WebReq to the Technology Solutions Centre. A WebReq that is submitted electronically to the Technology Solutions Centre is the only method of ordering equipment. We are unable to accept paper copies of WebReqs or other payment methods.

Note: As outlined in the WebReq instructions, the vendor for your order is Microserve. You will be invoiced by Microserve for your purchase. The Technology Solutions Centre is not a vendor and will not invoice you directly for your purchase.

When will my hardware arrive?

For a TSC standard computer, your new computer should arrive on the next business day after the WebReq has been processed by Purchasing.

For a custom Dell or Lenovo computer, please anticipate 2-3 weeks (Dell) or 6-8+ weeks (Lenovo) for delivery after the WebReq has been processed by Purchasing. Custom workstations are orderedly directly from the manufacturer and are built to order.

Where will my new hardware be delivered?

Your new hardware will be delivered to the location specified on the WebReq. This can be your desktop support person, your department's general office, or even your office. You will not need to transport a computer from the Technology Solutions Centre to your office. Remember to include the building and room number to avoid incorrect deliveries.

How does my warranty work?

All Dell workstations have a 3-Year Next Business Day Onsite Service including parts and labour and keep your hard drive.

Please contact the Computer Help Desk or TSC to arrange for warranty service for your standard Dell computer.

What if none of these workstations meet my computing needs?

Please contact the Technology Solutions Centre to discuss a solution to meet your requirements. We will be happy to work with you to find alternative hardware to meet your needs.

What is the difference between the Bookstore and the Technology Solutions Centre?

The Bookstore provides non-institutional retail sales for students, faculty, and staff at UVic. The Technology Solutions Centre is the authority for institutional purchases, technical approvals, technology reviews, and equipment repair. The Bookstore and the Technology Solutions Centre work closely together.

Are Apple computers available?

Yes! If you are eligible to obtain non-standard technology, the TSC can help you with ordering through UVic's online Apple store.

How can I get peripherals for these workstations, such as power bars, ethernet cables, laptop bags, or cable locks?

Commonly requested peripherals have been included in the accessories. If you require other peripherals, please contact the Bookstore. The TSC does not keep items in stock for resale, but can help with sourcing vendors for specific needs.

How do I get service for these workstations?

Please contact your department's desktop support or the Computer Help Desk to receive assistance with your workstation.

Who do I contact for repairs of computing equipment?

Please contact your department's desktop support or the Technology Solutions Centre to arrange for repairs of computers purchased through the Technology Solutions Centre. Repairs of Apple computers will be performed by our Apple-certified technicians; Apple computers can be dropped off at the Bookstore or the Computer Help Desk for this service. Repairs to computers purchased through the Computer Store or Bookstore can be performed by the Bookstore. Repairs to all other computers can be performed by the Computer Help Desk.

Are these configurations available to students?

Unfortunately, no. The TSC is currently equipped only for institutional sales for faculty and staff via WebReq. Retail computer purchases are available from the Bookstore.

All desktops and laptops come with 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise operating system, Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus, 3-years of Symantec Endpoint Protection, a 10ft network cable, as well as 3-years of on-site pro support next business day warranty.

Standard disk encryption

Symantec Endpoint Protection

Microsoft BitLocker drive encryption is included in Windows 7 Enterprise and recommended for use with all capable TSC standard workstations. There is no additional cost for this disk encryption software.

Standard anti-virus

Symantec Endpoint Protection

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) provides protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malware. It provides a host-based firewall and intrusion detection, as well as protection against zero-day and unknown threats. It is a critical tool for keeping personal and university information safe. University Systems is pleased to provide this software to current faculty and staff for both home and office use.
