Data loss prevention

Data loss prevention software helps to manage how confidential information is being used on end-user workstations. It can discover and monitor confidential information and, when required, take actions to protect information from being inappropriately used. For example, it can be used to prevent an end-user from copying a file containing credit card numbers to a USB flash drive.

University Systems recommends and supports Symantec Data Loss Prevention software, which provides benefits such as central management, policy enforcement, and reporting. While this software can be used on most computers, it is primarily intended for laptops and related devices that may contain internal, confidential, or highly-confidential information.

How do I access this service?

Initial deployments of this software are part of a PCI-DSS compliance initiative, so coordination through the Finance department is necessary. For other non-PCI-DSS compliance uses, please contact the Information Security Office before purchasing licenses.

Once the license has been obtained, contact the Computer Help Desk or your local desktop support staff. They can assist with the download and installation of the software.

What is the cost for this service?

Symantec Data Loss Prevention Basic costs $33.75 with 3 years of maintenance included. Licenses can be obtained from the Technology Solutions Centre.

When is this service available?

This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. You can be informed of service interruptions by subscribing to Informed. Servers do not need to be available or reachable for this service to function (i.e. you can take your laptop off campus).
