About us

Outside of the FPH

Greetings from the Director

Ruth YoungOn behalf of the Office of Indigenous Affairs (INAF) team, I would like to acknowledge the Lekwungen-speaking peoples on whose territory the University of Victoria resides.

From our progressive approach to teaching and research to our range of partnerships with local Indigenous communities, UVic is committed to fostering a learning environment that is supportive of and responsive to the diverse needs of Indigenous learners. But what makes UVic the place to be is the people. Our Elders are constant teachers, guides and supporters; our faculty are leading innovative research projects with and for communities; our staff members are committed to supporting students at every step in their educational journeys; and our students get involved, support one another and work towards creating a caring community on campus.

I encourage you to visit our campus to learn more about our programs and services – and stop by the First Peoples House to say hello!

Meegwetch,
Ruth Young (Cree Nation of Wemindji)
Director, Office of Indigenous Affairs

History and mission

The Office of Indigenous Affairs (INAF) was officially created in January 2007. Before INAF, the Aboriginal Liaison Office offered support to Indigenous students on campus.

INAF's main responsibility is supporting Indigenous students, but the Office has taken on many other roles as well. Current roles include managing the First Peoples House, building and supporting Indigenous partnerships and ensuring that Indigenous content and ways of knowing are included in UVic curriculum and events. INAF also works with the Office of the Registrar to welcome more Indigenous students to campus and make sure you have the tools you need to excel in your studies.
