Kenneth Macartney has recently joined the Centre for Global Studies and the University of Victoria as our Diplomat in Residence and Adjunct Professor. In 2018, Ken also became an Associate Fellow with the Centre.

Ken started with the CFGS in 2017 as a Global Affairs Canada senior official and former ambassador, on a one-year exchange with the University of Victoria. A graduate of UVic (B.A. History 1982), Ken looks forward to assisting UVic with its broad range of international interests.  In this capacity, he has been appointed an Adjunct Professor with the Faculty of Social Sciences, based at the CFGS.  Throughout his 35-year career in the Foreign Service, Ken has served in many capacities, including as Ambassador to Sweden, Deputy High Commissioner to India, political officer at Canadian embassies in Norway and Japan, Director General for South and Southeast Asia, as a desk officer dealing with such issues as the UN, relations with the Middle East and anti-apartheid measures, and in leading Canadian delegations in numerous multilateral negotiations, in particular on global sustainable development issues. ​
