New CYC online lab course
The School of Child and Youth Care is presenting their first distance lab course, CYC 152, Introduction to Helping Skills in Child and Youth Care Practice.
There will be multiple online sessions at the same time each week. You’ll start with a session with the full class, then you’ll break into groups of three to attend your online sessions. You’ll rotate between the roles of observer, child and youth care worker, and client. The instructor will move between the virtual labs, and the sessions will be recorded.
This course focuses on introducing foundational helping and communication skills. You’lll explore the use of interpersonal and communication skills, helping strategies, and the development of therapeutic relationships within the context of the core elements of child and youth care practice.

Minor in Public Administration
If you’re enrolled in another UVic undergraduate program you can combine it with a Minor in Public Administration.
The minor will give you a range of topics relevant to the public and/or non-profit sectors, including applied policy and public sector management. You can complete it online (distance), but some courses are available on campus.
Who’s it for?
This program is designed for those wanting a broad view of the public and/or non-profit sectors, including applied policy, public sector management, or local government management. By completing as few as six courses, you can go on to work in governments at the federal, provincial or local level.
Combining a Minor in Public Administration with your major opens the door to real and immediate career options. Adding a co-operative work term to your degree brings that career one step closer.
A Minor in Public Administration will help you:
- understand the role, growth, and importance of governments and the non-profit sector in British Columbia and the rest of Canada
- gain knowledge of managerial theory
- apply management theory in work situations to deliver effective and efficient service
- learn the skills and tools to analyze and communicate complex management issues
- create, recommend and implement solutions to management problems
- learn new study skills with online courses
