Philippe Lucas, Studies in Policy and Practice program
Why I chose UVic
After many years at a number of different universities throughout Canada (Concordia, Carleton, Bishop's, UBC), I picked UVic for my graduate studies because of its smaller size, great faculty and overall academic excellence ... and let's not forget the bunnies!
What the SPP program offered me
The Studies in Policy and Practice (SPP) program was a specific draw to UVic. As a long-time social activist and community organizer focused on drug policy reform and social justice issues as a whole, I found SPP to be very responsive to my past experience. Their courses and curriculae gave me the theoretical background to better understand some of the dynamics and policies I was seeking to change or improve.
The funding I received
I was fortunate enough to receive a graduate fellowship from the Center for Addictions Research to help cover the cost of course work and research during my time with the SPP program, which was supplemented by additional funding from the university's Graduate Studies department. Additionally, I was the recipient of the UVic Blue and Gold Award recognizing academic excellence and contributions to the community. This financial award also helped fund my time at SPP.
An amazing experience
Overall, I had an amazing experience within the SPP program, and much of what I learned along the way continues to benefit me as both a community researcher and City Councillor.
It was truly an honor to have the mentorship of so many active and experienced critical social researchers within the SPP faculty (with a special nod to Susan Boyd, my thesis advisor). I would recommend this program to any social activists, community organizers, or students interested in making our world better through community engagement and critical social research.
