Senior Lab Instructor Position - HINF

The School of Health Information Science invites applications for the position of full-time Senior Lab Instructor.

Reporting to the Director of the School of Health Information Science, the successful candidate will:

  • Organize, manage, prepare, teach and grade health informatics courses and laboratory sections of established courses
  • Administrative duties will include supervising teaching assistants and other lab instructors, advising students about lab requirements, evaluating hardware and software for purchase, managing HINF lab spaces, managing lab equipment usage and maintaining the operability and security of computer systems and equipment
  • Be involved in helping set up a range of health information technologies used for teaching students
  • Maintain and oversee a repository of lab teaching materials, software and equipment

Requirements

This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree (MA or MSc) in Health Information Science, Health Informatics, Biomedical Informatics, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field, with a strong understanding of health informatics trends and issues. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include: 

  • Experience with teaching in a post-secondary setting, including leading lab sessions.
  • Strong ability to organize and teach lab sections for larger courses, with an openness to new ideas and methods.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and use of health information technologies, including electronic health records, decision support tools, and mobile applications in healthcare.
  • Ability to identify and suggest new technologies for lab use, based on current trends and challenges in health informatics.
  • Demonstrated information technology skills, including procurement, installation, licensing, maintenance and teaching of software, hardware and equipment.
  • Experience supervising, guiding and supporting new educators, lab instructors, and students.
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to set up and run distance education software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a diverse population and with all levels of university personnel.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Excellent critical thinking, judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of open-source software and applications, AI and/or data science is an asset.

The School of Health Information Science emerged in 1981 at the University of Victoria out of a desire to improve health care through the development of information technology. Since its inception, our school has been at the cutting-edge of health informatics education, research and consultancy at both the national and international levels. We were the first post-secondary program in health informatics in Canada and we are now one of the most well-known programs in health informatics in the world.
