For hundreds of UVic students walking across the stage at convocation is the achievement of an academic milestone earned through hard work and perseverance. During Fall Convocation on November 13th and 14th, 1,493 degrees, certificates and diplomas were conferred to students. More than 220 of the newest grads received 419 donor-funded awards during their academic journeys.

One of those grads is Cheryl (Miaoxin) Cui, who received the Rose Wan Business Scholarship in 2017. “Thanks to the scholarship, I was able to go for an international Co-op term and gained valuable experiences with less financial concerns.” Cheryl says, “The knowledge, network and skill set developed during my internship directly made me have a clearer picture of my career path.”

Cheryl is already making her mark in the business community by landing a job with the Bank of Montreal in Vancouver as a financial planning associate even before graduation. “I love it because I can talk to different people every day while offering advice to them,” she says. But Cheryl’s experience at Gustavson Business School taught her to think bigger, “I see myself being a full-time entrepreneur in the future.”

Cheryl credits the support she received from donors and alumni at UVic for helping her achieve her success while at UVic, “It made me realize the strong support of students dedicating time toward academics, personal growth, and community involvements,” she says, “It has motivated me to pass the kindness along to the next generation when I become capable. “
