Announcing the 12th Annual Middle East and Islamic Studies
Consortium of British Columbia Student Conference

Call for Papers

Where: University of Victoria, 3800 Finnerty rd, Victoria, B.C., Canada
When: Saturday, April 4th, 2020. 9:00am-5:00pm


Founded in 2008, The Middle East and Islamic Consortium of British Columbia
(MEICON-BC) is a collaborative student conference between Simon Fraser University,
the University of Victoria, and the University of British Columbia, with the participation
of other universities and colleges.

MEICON-BC aims to the further establishment of Islamic studies by offering graduate
and senior undergraduate students the ability to disseminate their knowledge and
engage in discussion that is facilitated by peers well versed in their chosen area of
study.

In keeping with the inclusive conception that Islamic Studies is embraced in a global
context, MEICON-BC will not privilege a singular topic in its selection of presentations.

Possible topics of research include, but are not limited to:

Middle East Geo-politics and Geo-cultures
Islamic Literatures in World Literatures
Islamic Art and Archaeology
Conceptualization of Islam in the Middle East
Narratives of Gender
Narratives of Conflict and Change
Margin and Periphery
Memory and Memorialization
Texts and Contexts
Power and Authority

Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, have a succinct thesis, clear goals and
methodology, and convincing conclusions that adhere to the argument. Papers in the
conference will be 15-20 minutes in length. Please send abstract submissions in a pdf
format with the title of the paper. In the body of the email, include a brief bio including
your full name, contact information, major(s), University, academic year, and area of
research interest to uvic.meicon@gmail.com by January 31th, 2020 .

We thank all those who apply. Those who have been accepted will be notified
by February 21, 2020.

Andrew Rippin Essay Prize

A prize of $500.00 will be awarded to a paper presented at the 2020 MEICON-BC
Student Conference. To apply for the prize, please send an additional letter of
application, 150-word abstract, and the attached essay around 3000 words to
uvic.meicon@gmail.com by February 15, 2020 .

Poster Submission Guidelines

Those who apply for the conference may be offered a space in our poster fair in
addition to, or in lieu of, a position in one of the panels. Applicants may also choose to
submit solely for the poster fair. Posters must be submitted for approval by March 1,
2020. Posters will be displayed in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. Those who have
been accepted will be notified by March 15, 2020.

Poster submissions can include, but are not limited to, the following content:

Middle East Geo-politics and Geo-cultures
Islamic Literatures in World Literatures
Islamic Art and Archaeology
Conceptualization of Islam in the Middle East
Narratives of Gender
Narratives of Conflict and Change
Margin and Periphery
Memory and Memorialization
Texts and Contexts

Please have posters in the following size: 84.1cm x 59.4 cm, or an A1 poster size.
Make clarity a priority: posters should be readable from a distance of 5 feet. Poster
Boards will be provided on which to mount your poster.
