Photo ID & Information Centre
UVic's Photo ID & Information Centre issues official photo identification for students, faculty, staff, alumni and retiree members. Your relationship to UVic determines your card type and associated privileges.
Terms of use are described in the cardholder agreement.
If your card is lost or stolen it is your responsibility to notify the Photo ID & Information Centre. Replacement cards are issued for a fee.
Student
cards
New students
New students
The ID card is the principal form of identification for all registered students and is used throughout your full course of study.
The UVic student card is your:
- official UVic cardholder identification
- required proof of identity for exams
- access to library privileges
- your Vikes athletics regular season game card*
- your Vikes recreation membership card*
- Universal Bus Pass (U-Pass)*
- means to participate in the Dining Plus program
* These services are available when applicable fees are included in tuition or if an opt-in is purchased.
If you are registered in at least one credit course you are eligible for a student card, and one on-campus credit course will provide you with the U-Pass charged in your tuition and it will be encoded onto your card. If you register into more courses at UVic (i.e - summer) you will need to have your card re-encoded (validated) again for the U-Pass privilege. You will be told the date your card is encoded (validated) for at the time it's provided to you with the cardholder information. Cards are available from the Photo ID Centre in the University Centre; please wait 24 hours after registering in courses to obtain your card. You will need your student number and one piece of government issued photo identification. If you live outside of Greater Victoria and are taking distant education courses, please contact us for your card.
Current students
Current students
If you are registered in at least one on-campus course you are charged a U-Pass fee in your tuition. You must have your card encoded (validated) in each academic session to activate your transit privileges, beginning on:
- late-April for students studying in summer session and
- late-August for students studying in winter session (September-April) or
- late-December for students studying in the spring term (January-April) only.

Distance Education and Co-op students are not automatically charged for the U-Pass program but can opt-in at the UVSS Info Booth. The opt-in fee is for the same services you would pay for if you were registered and assessed the fees in your tution as an on-campus student. The opt-in fee includes the U-Pass, (UVSS or GSS fee if not charged already) and the UVic Athletics/Recreation fee.
Distant Education students must provide proof of status from the department (on letterhead and e-mail is acceptable), send to - uvssinfo@uvss.ca. Proof must state you are either a full time or part time student.
Faculty and
staff cards
Faculty & staff
The ID card is the required form of identification for faculty and staff and is your access to campus services.
The UVic faculty/staff card is your:
- cardholder identification
- access to library privileges
- access to athletic privileges
- regular/continuing staff members automatically receive athletic privileges
- sessional lecturers (more than .5 FTE) and temporary staff with appointments are eligible for athletic privileges but must contact the Vikes Recreation office for details
- means to participate in the Dining Plus program
All current UVic employees are eligible for a faculty/staff card. Cards are available from the Photo ID Centre in the University Centre. You will need one piece of government issued photo identification.
Alumni

UVic alumni
For a one-time fee, UVic alumni can purchase a card that provides photo identification, discounts and privileges on and off campus.
The UVic alumni card is your:
- cardholder identification
- access to UVic library privileges
- access to UVic athletic privileges
- access to UVic Bookstore savings
- means to participate in the UVic Dining Plus program
- access to over 3 dozen off-campus benefits including hotels, cars rentals and entertainment
UVic alumni cards are available from the Photo ID Centre in the University Centre. You will need your UVic student number and one piece of government issued photo identification. A $15 fee applies.
If you live outside of Greater Victoria and are unable to visit the Photo ID Centre, please contact us for information on how to obtain your card. For further details, see the UVic Alumni Card program.
Associate alumni (graduates of other post-secondary institutions)
Associate alumni
For a one-time fee, graduates of other post-secondary institutions other than UVic (associate alumni) can purchase a card that provides photo identification, discounts and privileges on and off campus.
Please contact Alumni Relations at least 24 hours prior to visiting the Photo ID Centre in order to get your identification number created.
When visiting the Photo ID Centre, you will need your ID# (V#) provided to you by Alumni Relations and one piece of government issued photo identification. A $50 fee applies.

Retiree

UVic faculty/staff retirees
UVic faculty/staff retirees
As a UVic retiree you are eligible for a UVic retiree card.
The UVic retiree card is your:
- cardholder identification
- access to library privileges
- access to athletic privileges
- means to participate in the Dining Plus program
You can obtain your card from the Photo ID Centre in the University Centre. You will need one piece of government issued identification.
Associate retirees (retirees from another university)
Associate retirees
As a retiree from another university (associate retiree) you are eligible for a UVic retiree card.
The UVic retiree card is your:
- cardholder identification
- access to library privileges
- access to athletic privileges
- means to participate in the Dining Plus program
As a retiree from a university other than UVic, you must contact the University of Victoria Retiree Association (UVRA) to determine your specific privileges and how to obtain them.

The Photo ID Centre issues custom UVic ID badges for those who require specific kinds of identification. Departmental authorization is required. Please contact us for details.
