Borrow from another library (Interlibrary loan)
Interlibrary loan (ILL) services provide you with resources from other libraries when UVic does not hold the item you need for your study or research.
New: ILL overdue fines will be $2 per day starting Sept. 3, 2013
How long is the loan period / Are there fines?
- Returnable items have a three week loan period and are not renewable.
- Fines for overdue interlibrary loan items are $2 per day.
- There is no courtesy email that your item is due soon.
Where do I pick up my interlibrary loans?
- Digital articles and book chapters are sent by email with a link to the digital copy.
- Pick up print articles from the self-serve baskets beside the loan desk.
- Pick up books and returnables at the loan desk.
Interlibrary loan basics
Interlibrary loan is a free service to request items not held by the UVic Libraries.
How do you know if UVic Libraries holds an item?
- Use the single search box (search everything) on the home page and upper right of every other page of this website.
- When you are in the catalogue, click the “Not @ UVic?” tab. This will take you to a page to request an item from another library.
- You can also access this page from request an interlibrary loan under the popular links menu in the right hand column of every web page.
- When requesting an item, the title is a required field. The more information you add, the better chance there is of the request being successful. Remember to omit initial articles; a, an, the, and their equivalents in other languages when searching by title.
The Interlibrary Loan Office is located in Room 292 on the second floor of McPherson Library with staff who are happy to answer your questions.

Highlights of our borrowing policy
- If UVic Libraries hold the title in any format (microform, e-book) or it is on reserve or checked out, you may not make an interlibrary loan request. If you do it will be cancelled.
- Books or returnable items have a three week loan period and are not renewable.
- Most articles and book chapters are delivered by email. The email message includes a link to the digital copy. Our system uses your @uvic.ca address, which can be forwarded to your favorite email address.
- Articles delivered byemail have a link to the PDF file which is available for 14 days. It can be accessed four times or printed.
- The pickup location for books is at the McPherson Library loan desk. Pick up printed articles is the self-serve baskets at the loan desk. If you are out of town and not able to pick up at McPherson Library, you can use the Infoline service.
- On the interlibrary request form there is a required "need by date" field. Please give as long as possible to avoid premature cancellation.
- Requests from undergrads are limited to Canada only. For exceptions, there is a letter of permission form.
