University of Victoria Special Collections holds books in all disciplines from the 16th century onward, and strives to acquire publications that complement the major subject and author areas of its manuscript holdings to provide more comprehensive research collections. From its inception, Special Collections has developed internationally recognized holdings in Modernist British, American and Anglo-Irish literature. Among the authors represented in print are: John Betjeman, T.S. Eliot, Robert Graves, Wyndham Lewis, Ezra Pound, Kathleen Raine, Herbert Read and Laura Riding.
To learn more about the Modernist collections, and other collection highlights, please read our University Archives/Special Collections insert to the Annual Review 2009/10.
Other subject areas collected include Canadian military history; early 20th century literary magazines; Northwest exploration, ethnology, art and anthropology; and regional and Southern Vancouver Island authors and literary culture.
Special Collections also houses the Seghers Collection, which consists of approximately 4,000 books on Catholic theology and church history, canon law, liturgy and ritual, canonization and monasticism. The collection has been on permanent loan to the University of Victoria Library from the Catholic Diocese of Victoria since 1976.
Records of all monographs and serials held in Special Collections are available in the University of Victoria Library catalogue. For retrieval of books, we require the call number of the item from the catalogue.
