Fines

We'll give you a due date and time for each item you check out. Due dates may change based on renewals and recall requests. Items not returned or renewed by the due date/time are subject to overdue fines or replacement charges.

Stay on top of your items and due dates with my library account to avoid library fines.

I want to check my fines

Log in to my library account to see the fines on your account. You will be suspended from borrowing if your library fines reach $20.00 or more.

Renew your items before they are due to avoid fines!

I want to pay or appeal my fine

Paying your fine

Outstanding charges can be paid:

  • in person by Interac, cash, VISA, MasterCard, American Express or cheque at the Main Loan Desk
  • in person by cash or cheque at the Curriculum Library
  • by mail to: University of Victoria Libraries, McPherson Library, PO Box 1800 Stn CSC, Victoria, BC V8W 3H5

Appeals

Most problems having to do with fines and/or suspensions can be resolved by speaking with the loan desk staff. If this does not solve your problem, speak with the administrator of the unit you borrowed the item from.

Appeals regarding the outcome of fines disputes can be made in writing to the Senate Committee on the Libraries, Subcommittee on Appeals.

Lack of knowledge of loan regulations, failing to note due dates, failing to renew on time, and failing to receive reminder notices are not acceptable reasons for cancellation of charges.

I have damaged or lost a borrowed item

Damaged items

Damage to library items must be reported to the appropriate loan desk. Borrowers will be charged the cost of replacement or the cost for repair, as appropriate, and applicable overdue fines.

An item with an overdue penalty of $20.00 will be assumed lost, and a replacement bill will be issued.

Queries regarding penalties can be directed to the Main Loan Desk, Music and Media Services Loan Desk, Map Library or the Curriculum Library Loan Desk.

Lost and missing items

Loss of library items must be reported to the appropriate loan desk. Borrowers will be charged the cost of replacement, a $30.00 processing fee and applicable overdue fines.

An item with an overdue penalty of $20.00 will be assumed lost and a replacement bill will be issued.

Borrowers who subsequently return items within one year of the due date will be refunded the cost of replacement charge.

Questions about lost items and penalties can be asked at the Main Loan Desk, Music and Media Services Loan Desk, Map Library or the Curriculum Library Loan Desk.

I have overdue items

Overdue items

Items are due at the hour and/or the day noted, either as specified at the time of loan or renewal or as modified by a recall notice.

Renew your items before they are overdue.

  • Overdue recalled items: $2.00 per day
  • Overdue reserve items: $1.20 per hour
