Normal entry points for first-year courses
Placement in a first year French course depends on your current level of proficiency. See the recommendations below or contact the undergraduate adviser in the Department of French for more information:

120: Elementary French (intensive 3.0 units) | Instruction in written and oral French including a review of the future and the conditional. Regular oral practice and short written assignments. | Normal entry point for students with French 11. Not open to students with French 12 in the last three years, or French immersion to Grade 7 |
French 12 |
160: Words in Context (1.5 units) | Expands vocabulary through the exploration of authentic oral and written texts, dictionaries and electronic resource materials. Oral practice. | Normal entry point for students with French 12. Not open for credit to students with Immersion beyond Grade 9. |
French immersion(to at least Grade 10) |
180: Intermediate French (intensive 3.0 units) | Development of skills in French with emphasis on writing. Hybrid classroom and online course. | Normal entry point for students with French Immersion to Grade 10 or higher. |

Transfer credits
Contact Undergraduate Admissions and Records for information on how to obtain transfer credit. If you receive transfer credit from another institution, the equivalency granted will allow you to register for the appropriate level of course.
Francophone students
A francophone is defined for the purposes of these regulations as a person who has spoken French since childhood and who has received sufficient secondary instruction in French to be literate in French. Francophone students may now obtain credit for FRAN 100, 120, 150, 160, 180, 300 or 350. They should contact the department for placement.

Centre d'aide francophone / French Help Centre
The Department of French offers a drop-in service in the Learning Commons, McPherson Library room 135i, helping undergraduate students at all levels with language problems.
