Language, dialect, and diglossia in Québec and Picardie - Dr. Julie Auger
Lansdowne Lecture presented by the Department of French
Lecturer: Dr. Julie Auger, Department of French and Italian, Indiana University
L'pére à Marie i croét toute 'Mary's father believes everything'. This sentence could be uttered by a Québécois speaker or a speaker of Picard. While this highlights how similar the two linguistic varieties are, I would like to argue that the two speakers hold very different views of such sentences and that their views reflect the social reality of their respective communities. Specifically, I will argue that such differences result in recognizing Picard as a distinct language with its own norm but considering Québec French as a variety of French.

The recruitment of Canadian English language assistants in French schools for the 2013/2014 school year is now open to students between the ages of 20 and 30. Applications open until March 1st, 2013.
This program, organized by the French Ministry of Education, is now in its 108th year: it debuted in 1905 as an arrangement between France and the UK. It is mainly (but not only) designed for students registered in DEPARTMENTS OF FRENCH and FACULTIES OF EDUCATION, to whom it offers unique first-hand experience of their future jobs as teachers - in a secure, professional environment, where they will be placed under the responsibility of a regular teacher. Assistants will not be fully in charge of a class, nor will they be responsible for conducting all classroom activities. Students from other departments and faculties are eligible too, provided they meet the application criteria.
220 positions are available to Canadian students for the period starting October 1st, 2013, and ending April 30th, 2014.
Further information is available on the French Embassy's website: http://www.ambafrance-ca.org/rubrique1145.html

“A CROWD-PLEASER!” –The Globe and Mail
There is lots to laugh at in this smash hit comedy (based on a true story) that has taken France and the rest of Europe by storm. And while the humour never strays far from the obvious and often clichéd cultural differences between its two main characters, it's a testament to the film's giddy energy that the fun shines through, regardless.
Driss (rising star Omar Sy, who won best actor at the Césars) applies for a job as a personal caregiver to a rich white paraplegic man, Philippe (François Cluzet), and before long the young man goes from living in the slums to having his own presidential suite-style bedroom in Philippe's mansion. Much of the humour revolves around Driss's discomfort with the less glamorous aspects of his work; his unfamiliarity with the lifestyles of the rich and refined; and his irrepressibly gregarious demeanour. The chemistry between Sy and Cluzet makes the formula work. Based on a true story, the premise has solid roots (remain seated during the credits to see the real duo, Philippe and Abdel). – The Montreal Gazette
