Student stories
While working as an office manager for BC's Ministry of Children and Families, Kay Chauhan (Social Work) was so impressed by the work that social workers were doing that she decided to go back to school and pursue a degree herself.
Wanting to help immigrant women
Originally from Nepal, Kay's own life experience compelled her to go into social work. While attending a women's support group, she found that immigrant women in abusive relationships were having difficulty accessing resources.
"I thought of the immigrants that come into the country that don't speak English, don't have a network of friends and family, don't have a legal background or know where to go for resources for support," Kay says. "I decided that these were the group of people I wanted to support."
UVic's outstanding social work distance program
Kay says that UVic stands out in terms of the professors in the social work distance program. "They are extremely supportive. They understand that you have another life with family and work. If you couldn't make the deadlines they were very understanding," she says. "They were so encouraging. If I hadn't received the support of the program and profs I probably would have dropped out."
Now that she's graduated Kay is already thinking ahead, and would like to do a Master's in Social Work by distance.
