Civil engineers awarded CFI leadership grants

Civil Engineering professors head two of five UVic projects receiving funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leadership Fund announced August 15th, 2017.

Hydrologist Tom Gleeson will receive $100,000 to establish a field and computer laboratory for studying groundwater science and sustainability around geological fault zones.

Environmental engineer Caetano Dorea will receive $60,000 to establish a lab to work on solutions to address the global need for improved water, sanitation and wastewater infrastructure, especially in remote communities.

Forging prosthetics from plastic for a pittanceTechnicians fit a Haitian amputee with a customized, locally printed Victoria Hand.

In a small, windowless lab in the University of Victoria’s faculty of engineering complex, prosthetic hands dangle from a peg board. These prototypes – produced with a 3-D printer and a few nuts and bolts – have launched a program that provides patients with customized, working hands in the most impoverished communities around the globe.

Saanich’s top engineer says he was “blown away” by the creativity and research that a group of University of Victoria student engineers displayed in trying to solve a real-life engineering problem.
