ABSTRACT

Abstract:
The technologies of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) became mature recently, enabling UAV surveillance system. The system aims to ensure seamless surveillance using a limited number of UAVs, where the operation cost and the coverage are main concerns. Once an incident happens, it can be tracked down to a triangle area by the nearest three UAVs. Then, we propose to dispatch a new supplementary UAV to further support the surveillance task in the tagged warning area. To optimize the performance, we aim to identify the best location for the supplementary UAV, minimize the maximum service distance in the area of an acute triangle. The closed-form expression of the optimal location of the supplementary UAV within an isosceles triangle is derived. Given the network dynamics due to high mobility, a real-time algorithm with low complexity, i.e., the equal service distance (ESD) algorithm, is proposed to find the optimal location within an arbitrary acute triangle. The performance of the proposed ESD algorithm has been compared with exhaustive search and other triangle's existing centers. The optimality of the proposed method is validated. The impacts of UAV's speed and processing time on the performance are investigated.
