ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT:

With the incease of converter power level its thermal management becomes more difficult. To overcome this shortcoming,a single-stage soft-switched ac-to-dc multiphase converter is proposed. This multiphase converter is realized using N single-phase single-stage soft-switched ac-to-dc bridge converter cells in parallel to obtain better thermal distribution while the cell characteristics are kept intact. Two consecutive cells are phase-shifted by 360/N degrees. This results in the cancellation of high frequency (HF) harmonic components in the line current. As a result, HF filter requirement in the line side is reduced. The output voltage ripple fequency is also increased by N times and lower output filter capacitance is required. Analyses of the single-stage cell are extended to the multiphase converter. Based on these analyses, optimum value of N is determined to reduce the HF harmonics in the line current. Design example of a 50 kHz, 5 kW ac-to-dc multiphase converter is presented. Simulation and prototype experimental results will be given to verify the converter operation and performance.
